Many runners cut back on their training in the winter. Chilly climate, rain and snow showers are elements that can add up to an extended winter spent mainly indoors.

Luckily, there may be a wide range of cold running gear that runners can use to stay warm and dry whereas logging their miles in the chilly climate.

The most popular gear used would be compression apparel.

These are meant to wick away moisture and keep your muscles at an optimum temperature for performance no matter the weather.

Here’s a few suggestions on what to wear when outside jogging in chilly weather:

  • If you’re a woman, use a compression sports bra.
  • Shorts or knee length spandex/compression shorts.
  • Inexpensive, not cheap, running gloves.
  • Head ware to keep the rain out of my eyes (preferably a hat with a front & back bill).
  • Tank top or short sleeve compression shirt as a base layer.
  • Running shirt, one that has long sleeves and thumb holes (these holes hook around your finger so the sleeve doesn't move up your arm while you run).
  • If it's truly cold, water shedding light compression jacket.  It should protect you but also allow moisture and some heat to escape. If you don’t have one of those, ski and or snowboard jackets even work.
  • Headbands are also popular to use to keep the ears warm & dry.
  • Don’t forget to use waterproof, breathable and comfortable socks. There is NOTHING worse than cold wet feet! Cotton socks, while comfortable, hold moisture, so steer away from those. A type would be a sock made out of nylon or acrylic fabric.

Running in the cold is just a matter of finding what works for you. It can be quite exhilarating to get out there, especially on those clear crisp and clean air nights! Also, you may want to consider reflective gear if you're a late afternoon or evening runner such as a:

  1. Reflective jacket or vest.  Both of these will shine and show when any light hits them (via moonlight or headlamps).
  2. Flashing light or Reflective tape (apply these to anything you're wearing).
  3. Headlamp. There are headlamps made specifically for runners. They fit nicely over your head with or without a hat, and after a few minutes you won't even remember you're wearing it.

BTW...Always remember to carry water with you. Even when it's cold, you need to be hydrated!

So, if you're outside this winter running, walking or jogging, it's bound to be cold sometime. Therefore, buying the best running gear for cold weather is a must to keep you warm, dry, comfortable and at your peak performance.
